Volume No.6 -- Post No. 10 -- Makaha Surf

We love the west side of Oahu, especially far up the west shore. This part of the island is far from the tons of people in Waikiki. It just feels like authentic Hawaii. For those of us that live here, but didn't grow up here, it feels like you've found a secret welcoming place.  It reminds you of the reasons you decided to make Hawaii your home.

I love to shoot into the sun. For me, the sunlight creates dramatic shadows and silhouettes. There is plenty of sun at Makaha Beach, so it didn't take long to capture these. I hope you like them.

Volume No.6 -- Post No. 9 -- Nikonos Underwater Film Camera

I decided to buy a Nikonos III underwater film camera to join my love of  film and my love of free diving.  The undersea world is such an organic place.  Film seems very at home here.  Below are few of my first shots using Ilford HP5 Plus that I pushed 1 stop.  NO LIGHTMETER!!! Very scary!  I basically used the Sunny 16 Rule for the surface and then subtracted 2 stops for being underwater.  It worked fairly well.  I'm going to try Ilford HP4 next and more exposure.  I'm looking forward to finer grain at 100 ASA.

Volume No.6 -- Post No. 8 -- Trying Slide Film

Film Photographer Oahu, Hawaii

I love film.  I took film photography in college and I loved the process of developing my own black and white film.  I am so glad there is a resurgence of interest in film photography.  Don't get me wrong, I love digital photography, but I love film photography even more.  I'm sure you've noticed that a majority of my film work is primarily black and white and that is for the simple reason that I can develop the film at home rather than mailing it out and having a lab develop it.

This post is featuring slide film.  It is a totally different process as the film has to be mounted on those slide sleeves to place in a projector to view your work.  I was going to participate in a slide film event at Treehouse Hawaii, but darn it, my daytime job got in the way and time just slipped out of my control. Regardless, it was still great to get out and shoot. Here are some highlights...

Ke'ahamoe Beach near Diamond Head, O'ahu (above).  You're not supposed to shoot vertical with slide film, because you can't load them into a slide projector to view.  Good news, it's a digital world and I scanned them. ; )

My Beautiful Wife, www.jenniferbrotchie.com  Oh, by the way, Jennifer and I always try to spend time together exploring Oahu and photographing together.  She has her "eye" and I have mine.  If you are curious to see what she photographed, check it out HERE.  I think it's interesting to see what she shot and how she shot it.

This is just a sampling of the shots I took.  It is always like opening up a gift and seeing what's inside when you see your photos since you do not have an LCD on the back of your camera to view, this is film!  It is a very satisfying feeling!!

Volume No.6 -- Post No. 7 -- I Love Planes and Travel

I love to travel.  It usually means I'm on vacation and I don't need to think about work for a while.  It also means I get to get my creative on and shoot whatever looks cool!!  I only took my film camera on my last trip.  Below are a few photos from my plane window.

Volume No.6 -- Post No. 5 -- Ilford HP5 Plus Pushed 3 Stops

I'm developing my own black and white film.  I took the film developing workshop at treehouse.  Mahalo to Bobby for making it possible, and mahalo to Chris for sharing his know-how!

So far, I've mostly developed Ilford HP5Plus 400.  The scans below are HP5Plus pushed to 3 stops (rated in camera at 3200 ISO).  I love the contrast and how much easier it is to shoot in low light situations.

Volume No.6 -- Post No. 4 -- Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park

Jennifer and I were out scouting the Northshore around Haleiwa looking for buildings to shoot for my architectural photography project.  I'll blog those photos another time.  I did want to share the peaceful beach scene below.  I love the blue sky and palm trees in Hawaii.
